Ken Ortega and Maggie Mordaunt of HPP Training were recently interviewed by Channel 3 News about the rise in people applying for Conceal Carry Weapon licenses. Maggie is often called on to weigh in on local news as an EXPERT in her field when it comes to use-of-force incidents or other stories related to firearms and/or rights. This time, it was both Maggie AND Ken who were asked if they noticed a rise of participants and applicants in CCW Courses.

This was a great piece for us to speak on. Steve Worlford asked some great questions which inspired some great dialogue regarding Conceal Carry Weapon training and other defense training courses.

Steve asked, “Have you seen an uptick of people who are registering for classes following the recent violent encounters in California?” The answer is broad. Usually, after incidents like that happen, people say, “you know, it’s probably a good time to get a gun and training”.

Over the years, that’s exactly what happens. Depending on whether it’s a local violent encounter that gets reported or a much larger national event that gets politicized and nationalized, the numbers always go up. Sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes it’s extreme. An example, in 2013 after Sany Hook, it was extreme. That incident was obviously very tragic. It was also very politicized and nationalized. The knee-jerk response for more “gun control” measures were loudly yelled by several far left politicians who had aspirations of more control and infringement of our 2nd Amendment as a narrative. Because that was all that was in the news cycle for weeks, the support for more “gun control” measures grew exponentially mainly because of the emotions involved with the incident itself. Because this incident tugged at the heartstrings of many Americans, and rightly so, leftists found a great opportunity to try to enact further restrictions. The result, panic buying for millions to purchase ammunition and firearms before laws could be passed and put in place. The spike in Conceal Carry Registrations was also part of that scramble. We had to double or even triple the number of courses we were offering per week due to this phenomenon. It was an immediate frenzy. At that time, we were a regular presence at Gun Show and even taught CCW Classes for Gun Shows. People were lined up around the building. Supplies were purchased so quickly that a supply shortage led to a spike in prices. With less firearms, ammunition and other supplies in such high demand, we witnessed price hikes like never before. At the time, AR-15’s were said to be on the chopping block so naturally, you couldn’t find one and if you did, it was 3 to 4 times the cost when under normal circumstances. That spike lasted for about a year and a half and as the news cycle refocused on other events or atrocities, in the end, no laws were ever passed and the trend faded over the next year to normal levels.

That same effect took place after the Virginia Tech shooting in April of 2007. Or the extreme terrorist attack at the Orlando Shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in 2016.

Even to more modern-era events such as the Robb Elementary school shooting at Uvalde Tx in May 2022 and most recently, the two back-to-back events in California.

This phenomenon was also exacerbated at the beginning of 2020 as the world shut down for the Pandemic.

Here in NV, neighbors were shaken after a homeowner was stabbed multiple times by a deranged suspect with clear mental health issues. That event wasn’t reported by news stations, but it did affect the mental state of the citizens of the community who are now looking to take a CCW Course and more Self Defense training.

To the point of the initial question. People usually make decisions about being more prepared with more firearms, more ammunition or more training after some type of event as opposed to making self-defense a priority BEFORE something happens.

The point is this quote from a friend in the Industry, “Your responsibility to defend yourself or others never ends – James Yeager”.

Waiting to get trained until AFTER an event has passed is like driving without your seatbelt then wanting to fasten it before you get into an accident. Just like Defense Training, You put that seat belt on just in case you need it in an emergency.

Don’t wait, Get Trained NOW.
